Meet the Women’s Storm Shell

There is a particular kind of West Coast day where it rains for eleven hours without pausing and the wind comes off the water sideways. Further east it shows up as an ice storm, or a front that crosses the prairies in an afternoon. Wherever you are, most jackets have a limit, and you usually find it about fourty minutes in — somewhere between the car and wherever you were actually headed.

The Storm Shell does not have that limit. Three-layer construction rated to 20,000mm waterproof, every seam sealed, built to keep doing its job long after the rain stopped being interesting. It is the shell for the weekend that goes ahead anyway: the October trail, the ferry lineup, the ski hill in a whiteout.

This is the most weatherproof piece Northern Sun has made, at roughly half what the same build costs elsewhere.

Features & Materials

3-Layer Waterproof Construction: A 100% polyester face bonded to a PU membrane and 15D tricot backer, rated 20,000mm waterproof and 20,000g/m²/24hr breathable, fully seam sealed throughout.

PFAS-Free Water Repellency: A plant-based, fluorine-free water-repellent finish — no forever chemicals, and no compromise on how it sheds rain.

Underarm Venting: Two-way waterproof underarm zippers open downward, releasing heat on the uphill without leaving a gap where the weather gets in.

Hood Adjustment: Adjustable at the front and back, with a concealed 3D front system that draws the hood in close and stays out of your sightline.

Adjustable Fit: Horseshoe cuffs with hook-and-loop closures and a shockcord hem let you seal the jacket down when the wind turns.

Smart Storage: High-set chest pockets that stay usable with a pack on, plus a laser-cut pocket inside.

Northern Sun Detailing: A whistle in the main zipper pull and a D-ring for a light or keys — quiet details from people who have been caught out before.

Temperature Rating

An uninsulated shell, so it is as warm as what goes underneath it. On its own it is a three-season wind and rain layer; over a Chinook Sherpa or a down midlayer it handles deep winter.

Machine wash cold. Hang dry. Do not iron or dry clean. For best results, follow the care label.
