Explore Canada Series: Part 14 - Yukon
The Yukon – Part 14: Aug 21, 2025
Last fall, I flew into Whitehorse to meet Greg — owner of North of Ordinary, a shop that proudly stocks Northern Sun jackets.
We spent a day setting up his store, grabbing coffee, and talking gear.
Then he handed me the keys to his Ford Bronco and said:
“Head to Kusawa. You’ll get it.”
So I did.
The Drive
Windows down. Red Hot Chili Peppers up. 🎸
I rolled past golden forests, along the Takhini River, through silent valleys and lookout points that felt like paintings come to life.
No traffic. No noise. Just me and the road.
Didn’t camp. Wish I had.
Next time, I’m bringing a tent.
Unique Experiences: Only in The Yukon
🏜️ Carcross Desert
A legit desert — yes, really.
Epic views, fun hills, and weird geography, just minutes from alpine lakes and hiking trails.
Perfect stop if you’re road-tripping from Whitehorse.
🪙 Klondike Gold Rush History
Dawson City still hums with frontier energy.
Walk the boardwalks, visit old saloons, and meet locals still panning for gold.
It’s like stepping back into a story.
☕ Whitehorse Favourites
-
Yukon Brewing 🍺
-
Baked Café for cinnamon buns 🍩
-
North of Ordinary — meet Greg, grab Yukon merch, and maybe your own Klondike plate.
🌌 Northern Lights Tours
Fall and winter are prime aurora season.
Book with a local guide, then let the skies take it from there.
Jason’s Recommendation ✨
Carcross. 100%.
Close to Whitehorse. Easy to reach. And just… unexpected.
Desert dunes, alpine lakes, mountain views, and history all wrapped up in one strange, beautiful package.
And if you’re in town — meet Greg.
His shop’s a vibe. The man knows stories. And he made my Yukon trip what it was.
Final Thoughts
There’s something about this place.
You arrive one person.
You leave a little quieter — and a lot fuller.
