Nova Scotia – Part 6: June 26th, 2025

From Christina at Northern Sun

Christina here! I usually stay behind the scenes leading all things creative and design at Northern Sun, but this week, Jason handed me the mic (and the keyboard). Why? Because when it comes to road-tripping through Nova Scotia, I’ve got a bit of experience… and a whole lot of love for the place. 💗

I’ve made my way east more than a few times, and it never gets old. Think: dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden hiking trails, lobster rolls that’ll change your life, and yes—surfable waves (even on the east coast of Canada!). It’s the kind of place that makes you want to unplug, explore, and soak up every salty breeze.

Christina’s East Coast Must-Do’s

🦞 Eat: Lobster rolls. Non-negotiable.
🥾 Hike: The Skyline Trail or Cape Split for views that actually made me speechless (not an easy task).
🏄♀️ Surf: Head to Lawrencetown and give it a go. I wiped out—gracefully. Kind of.
🧥 Wear: Something waterproof (trust me) and wind-friendly. The coast doesn’t mess around.

If you’re looking for your next Canadian summer adventure, Nova Scotia is it. And if you’ve already been—go again. I always do. ☀️

If you still aren't convinced, check out some of my road trip photos below!

See you on the road,
– Christina

Unique Experiences

Your Ocean Playground

🌅 Sand Flats

One of Nova Scotia’s most magical coastal secrets? The vast sand flats that stretch out at low tide like a mirror to the sky. These otherworldly landscapes are perfect for barefoot walks, sunset photos, and feeling like you’ve stepped onto another planet.

  • Head to Burntcoat Head Park—home to the world’s highest tides—for an unforgettable view of the ocean floor.

  • Or visit Blue Beach and Mavillette Beach for quieter stretches of tidal beauty.
Just check the tide charts—you’ll want to catch them at their most dramatic.

🏄♂️ Coastal Surf Town: Lawrencetown

Nova Scotia’s quintessential surf town is a picture-perfect blend of dramatic Atlantic beauty and laid-back charm. Just a 25‑minute drive from Halifax, this 1.5 km stretch of sand-and-cobble beach is home to waves for every level.

  • Beginners can grab lessons at East Coast Surf School right on the beach

  • Advanced surfers hit the point breaks at either end

  • Off the board, stroll the Atlantic View Trail (a converted rail-bed)

  • Or unwind with a local brew at Lunn's Mill Beer Co.

🏞️ Cape Breton Island

A must-visit for jaw-dropping coastal views, winding cliffside roads, and rich Acadian and Celtic culture.

  • Drive the iconic Cabot Trail

  • Hike through Cape Breton Highlands National Park

  • Catch live fiddle music in a cozy local pub

From whale watching to waterfall hikes, it’s where wild nature meets soul-stirring charm.

✨ Jason’s Christina’s Recommendation

If you're a fan of seafood (if you're not, you're missing out), don’t skip the chance to stop at a local lobster pound or seafood market—it’s the ultimate East Coast experience.
These casual, often family-run spots offer the best fresh seafood, and you can leave with a fully cooked lobster (no wait required!). 🦞

It’s casual, authentic, and wildly delicious. Always worth pulling over for—especially if you spot a handwritten chalkboard sign.
