Explore Canada Series: Part 9 - The Seven
The Coolest Thing I Did as a Kid Wasn’t Disney
The Seven – Part 8: July 10, 2025
Childhood Memories & Fresh Adventures in The Seven
(aka the time Science North blew my little mind)
When I was a kid, my mom packed us into the car and drove from Winnipeg to Toronto.
Her mission? Keep it educational and fun—and honestly, she nailed it.
We stopped at old forts, cultural sites, even tried amethyst mining (underrated).
But nothing hit like Science North in Sudbury. 🧪⚡
It was part museum, part spaceship, part mad scientist lab—and my siblings and I lost our minds.
We built mini dams. Got zapped by static electricity. Laid on a literal bed of nails.
We loved it so much, we begged to go back on the return trip.
Unique Experiences Only in The Seven
🪨 Don’t Sleep on Sudbury
Today, Sudbury’s still delivering. If you've got curious kids (or are a grown-up who still presses every button), it’s a must-stop:
-
🔩 Science North – everything from fossils to robotics
-
⛏️ Dynamic Earth – take an underground mining tour
-
🪙 The Big Nickel – get your classic road trip photo
-
📚 The area's mining + geological history? Fascinating
But the best part?
Sudbury is just the gateway. Keep going north and you’ll hit the kind of adventure that makes summer feel like summer again.
🧭 Wild Experiences Only in The Seven
🛣️ Lake Temiskaming Tour
A two-day road trip made for playlists and pit stops.
Start in Haileybury or Ville-Marie, hit scenic lookouts, hike coastal trails, and always say yes to a swim or a bakery detour.
🚗 Chill. Scenic. Surprisingly underrated.
🌲 Point Grondine Park
Owned by the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, this 18,000-acre park is old-growth forest, wild rivers, and canoe routes for days.
-
Backcountry camp under the stars
-
Paddle crystal-clear water
-
Hike through silence that resets your brain
Luke & Beth run the show—good people who’ll make sure you’re set up right. 🛶💚
💦 Tubing in Espanola
This one’s just fun.
The Espanola River is tailor-made for lazy summer floats:
-
Tube
-
Kayak
-
Paddleboard
-
Or just drift with a cooler and some friends
🎵 Good tunes + zero stress = Canadian summer at its best.
🌅 Sunsets in Killarney
Park yourself at George Lake beach and watch the sun drop behind the La Cloche Mountains.
It’s silent, glowing, and weirdly emotional. Bonus: hit Herbert Fisheries for fish and chips right before. 🐟🍟
Jason’s Recommendations ✨
-
Science North is still the best—nostalgia and discovery in one stop
-
Espanola tubing is peak mellow (bring sunscreen + a waterproof speaker)
-
Point Grondine? Unreal. Go for the paddling, stay for the peace
-
Lake Temiskaming Tour is for road trip purists—windows down, snacks on deck, nowhere to be
This part of the province keeps surprising me.
Some days it’s the morning mist over a lake.
Other days it’s a random chat with someone at a gas station that turns into a 10-minute life story.
Either way—you’ll remember it.
