Explore Canada Series: Part 20 - Northwest Territories
Northwest Territories – Part 20: June 25, 2026
Some places feel far. The Northwest Territories feels different.
Up here, summer doesn’t follow the same rules. The days stretch late into the night, the air feels a little cleaner, and the pace slows down whether you want it to or not.
Most people think of the North as something remote or hard to get to. And yeah, it takes a bit more effort. But once you arrive, it’s well worth the trek.
Yellowknife is usually the starting point, sitting right on the edge of Great Slave Lake - one of the deepest lakes in the world. From there, it’s easy to head just a little outside the city and feel like you’ve stepped into something completely untouched.
If You Go
- Prelude Lake Territorial Park - About 30 minutes from Yellowknife. Calm water, quiet campsites, and an easy place to spend a full day doing very little.
- The Ingraham Trail - One of the best drives in the territory. Lakes, rock, and plenty of places to pull over.
- Great Slave Lake shoreline - Cold, massive, and worth seeing up close.
- Yellowknife Old Town - Grab a coffee, walk around, and take in the character of the place.

Good to Know
Even in summer, temperatures can shift - especially in the evenings. Bring your layers.
And don’t expect darkness the way you’re used to it. The light sticks around longer than you think.
Happy Exploring!
