Explore Canada Series: Part 21 - Northern BC
Northern BC – Part 21: July 2, 2026
Some places feel like the edge of something. Northern BC feels like the beginning of everything.
Once you get past the busy corridors - Whistler, Kelowna, the usual stops - the province opens up in a completely different way. It’s mountains, rivers, forests, and space. Lots of it. Most people don’t make it this far north & that’s exactly why it’s worth going.
This is the kind of trip for a full tank, a flexible route, and someone who’s just as excited about the in-between moments as the destinations.
If You Go
- Smithers - A small mountain town with serious charm. Good food, great views, and a slower pace.
- Stewart & Hyder - Right on the Alaska border. Glaciers, bears (depending on the season), and one of the most unique little corners you’ll find.
- The Cassiar Highway (Hwy 37) - Less travelled than the Alaska Highway, but arguably more memorable.
- Any lake you pass - Pull over. There’s a good chance you’ll have it to yourself.
Good to Know
Distances are bigger than they seem. Plan fuel stops ahead of time and don’t assume the next town is close.
Weather can shift quickly, especially in the mountains - layers are key.
Enjoy the journey!

A quick reminder to explore responsibly: always check conditions before you go, pack for changing weather, bring the proper gear, and make sure someone knows your plans. Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors.
